You have to have Larzuk socket them. And rare items with the Mechanic's prefix can have sockets, so that makes it an even more worthless recipe.

There are also a few recipes for magic items, but they reroll the affixes on the magic item and the new ilvl is set too low, making the recipe useless for adding sockets to an already good item. And if you want to use one of these recipes for rolling a good magic item with sockets, the possible affixes will be mostly weak, because the best of those recipes gets you an item with a measly ilvl Immune to criticals, criticism, negative board level, etc.

You can do this once per difficulty Normal, Nightmare, Hell for a total of three socket quests per character. One of the more confusing aspects to understand about the number of sockets Larzuk grants is the item level for white and gray items.

The item level is calculated based on the monster level that drops the item.
